Moscow: The airport in Kazan, Russia, resumed operations on Saturday after briefly shutting down earlier in the day due to a Ukrainian drone strike, according to Russia's aviation authority.
Russian state media reported that the attack targeted a residential area and other locations in Kazan, which is located about 500 miles (800 km) east of Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the city was hit by three waves of drones between 7:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. (0440 and 0620 GMT). It added that three of the drones were intercepted by air defense systems, while another three were disabled by electronic warfare measures.
There were no reports of casualties, according to local authorities. Kazan’s mayor announced on Telegram that all scheduled public events in the city would be canceled for the weekend, and temporary housing would be provided for evacuees.
The Baza Telegram channel, linked to Russian security services, shared unverified footage showing an aerial object crashing into a high-rise building, causing a large fireball.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, condemned the attack, accusing Ukraine of channeling its frustration over military setbacks by targeting civilians in Russia.
Airports in Izhevsk, a smaller city northeast of Kazan, and Saratov, about 400 miles (650 km) to the south, also briefly suspended flights, according to Rosaviatsia, Russia’s aviation watchdog. These restrictions were later lifted.
