In just the first two weeks of the Jubilee Year 2025, over half a million pilgrims have walked through the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. According to a press release on Tuesday, a total of 545,532 faithful from around the world have made the journey to Rome since the Jubilee's commencement.
The Holy Year officially began on December 24, 2024, marked by pilgrims processing along Via della Conciliazione, led by the symbolic Jubilee Cross, to reach the iconic basilica.
Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and the Jubilee's coordinator, hailed the turnout as “a very meaningful beginning.” He noted that the crowds making their way to the basilica represent “a powerful witness” and reflect the strong sense of safety and organization felt throughout Rome and its four papal basilicas.
The statement emphasized the Vatican’s collaboration with Italian authorities and Rome’s prefecture to ensure the smooth management of the influx. While initial challenges were encountered, Archbishop Fisichella reassured pilgrims that efforts are underway to enhance their experience. “Our team is working diligently to provide a warm welcome and ensure the pilgrimage meets everyone’s expectations,” he said.
With the final Holy Door, at St. Paul Outside the Walls, opened on January 5, pilgrims can now visit all four papal basilicas—St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls—to complete their Jubilee pilgrimage. Due to high demand, visitors are encouraged to book their pilgrimage in advance through the official Jubilee website, iubilaeum2025.va.
The Jubilee for Communication, the first major event of the Holy Year, is scheduled from January 24 to 26. Thousands of journalists and communication professionals are expected to gather in Rome for the occasion, as the Vatican and the city continue preparations to welcome millions more throughout this significant year.
