New FBI Director Kash Patel intends to reassign up to 1,500 employees

New FBI Director Kash Patel has announced plans to relocate up to 1,000 employees from Washington to field offices across the country and move an additional 500 to a bureau facility in Huntsville, Alabama. This decision aligns with Patel's vision of reducing the FBI’s footprint in Washington and increasing its presence in other cities.

Patel's plans were communicated on Friday, the same day he was sworn in at the White House. "Director Patel has made clear his promise to the American public that FBI agents will be in communities focused on combatting violent crime. He has directed FBI leadership to implement a plan to put this promise into action,” the FBI said in a statement.

Patel was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday by a 51-49 margin, with two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, breaking ranks to vote against him. At his swearing-in ceremony, Patel expressed that leading the FBI was the “greatest honor” of his life. President Donald Trump praised Patel, predicting he would be the best ever in that position and adding that the “agents love this guy.”

Patel is stepping into a turbulent time at the FBI, with recent Justice Department actions forcing out senior officials and seeking the names of agents involved in Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot investigations. Democrats have voiced concerns that Patel might act as a Trump loyalist and misuse FBI powers. During his confirmation hearing, Patel assured that he would follow the Constitution and had no interest in pursuing retribution, though he also criticized the media for “fake, malicious, slanderous and defamatory” stories about him.

Republicans have rallied behind Patel, viewing him as the right choice amid perceived law enforcement bias against conservatives and investigations into Trump. Patel has advocated for significant changes at the FBI, including a reduced presence in Washington and a greater focus on traditional crime-fighting rather than intelligence-gathering. He emphasized that the FBI’s national security mission is as important as its efforts to combat violent crime and drug overdoses.

Patel, a former Justice Department counterterrorism prosecutor, was selected in November to replace Christopher Wray, who resigned at the end of the Biden administration. Wray had drawn Trump’s ire, including over the Mar-a-Lago search for classified documents in 2022.

FBI directors are given 10-year terms to shield them from political influence. However, Trump fired his inherited FBI director, James Comey, and replaced Wray after more than seven years in the role.
