Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has received an official invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to attend an emergency Arab League summit in Cairo on March 4, marking a significant step in Syria’s reintegration into the Arab world.
Sharaa, who was declared president for a transitional phase last month following the downfall of Bashar al-Assad, has prioritized strengthening ties with Arab nations. His administration has pledged to implement a political transition that includes forming an inclusive government and preparing for eventual elections, which could take up to four years.
Egypt has been cautious in its approach to Syria’s new leadership, emphasizing the need for an inclusive transition process free from external interference. While President Sisi had previously extended his congratulations to Sharaa, the Cairo summit will mark their first direct meeting.
The emergency summit will primarily focus on Arab efforts to counter U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial plan to redevelop Gaza and his calls for Egypt and Jordan to resettle displaced Gazans. The meeting is expected to be a key moment in shaping regional diplomacy amid ongoing political shifts in the Middle East.
