Pope Francis Resting After Respiratory Episodes, Condition Remains Stable

Pope Francis is resting following two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, according to the Holy See Press Office. Pope, who has been receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14, continues respiratory therapy and physiotherapy under medical supervision.

The Holy See Press Office reported on Tuesday morning that Pope “slept through the night and now continues to rest.” He has resumed high-flow oxygen therapy via a nasal cannula but is not on mechanical ventilation.

The respiratory episodes on Monday were caused by a buildup of endobronchial mucus, leading to bronchospasm. Doctors performed bronchoscopies to clear the mucus, and non-invasive mechanical ventilation was briefly resumed. Despite the crisis, Pope Francis remained alert, oriented, and cooperative throughout.

Blood tests indicate no new respiratory infection, as his white blood cell count remains stable. However, Pope's clinical condition remains complex, with the possibility of further respiratory difficulties.

Medical professionals from the Vatican Governorate and the Gemelli Polyclinic continue to monitor the Holy Father, with his prognosis described as “guarded.” Tuesday morning was dedicated to rest and prayer as he recovers.
