Pope Francis continues to make gradual progress in his recovery from bilateral pneumonia at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, according to an update from the Holy See Press Office on Sunday evening.
The statement confirmed that Pope has been actively following the Spiritual Exercises of the Roman Curia via video link from the hospital. The Lenten retreat, which commenced on Sunday afternoon in the Paul VI Hall, is being led by Fr. Roberto Pasolini, OFM Cap., the Preacher of Papal Household. Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis remains spiritually connected with those participating in the retreat.
Earlier in the day, Pope received a visit from Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Substitute for the Secretariat of State. He also celebrated Mass with the medical staff and caregivers attending to him during his recovery.
His treatment continues with respiratory and motor physiotherapy, alongside a prescribed diet that now includes solid foods. According to the latest medical updates, the Pope's condition remains stable, with signs of gradual improvement. However, doctors remain cautious due to the complexity of his overall health situation.
As part of his recovery plan, Pope Francis receives high-flow oxygen therapy during the day and transitions to non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night. A new medical bulletin is expected on Monday evening, as no update was issued on Sunday due to the stability of his condition.
Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis shared a message for the Angelus, expressing gratitude to the medical staff caring for him and offering prayers for those suffering from illnesses worldwide.
"During my prolonged hospitalization here, I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and healthcare workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart," he stated.
The Vatican continues to monitor his condition closely, with faithful around the world praying for his full recovery.
