Vodafone Idea has entered preliminary discussions with multiple satellite communication firms, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, the company confirmed on Wednesday. The move comes just a week after its Indian telecom rivals inked agreements with Starlink to introduce satellite-based internet services in the country.
The disclosure follows a request for clarification from Indian stock exchanges regarding Vodafone Idea's stock movement and a report by financial news platform Moneycontrol earlier in the day. Shares of the telecom firm surged nearly 5% in response.
“Our goal is to extend connectivity—both fixed and mobile—to underserved regions where satellite technology is the ideal solution,” said Vodafone Idea’s Chief Technology Officer, Jagbir Singh, as quoted by Moneycontrol. “Additionally, we aim to expand fixed wireless broadband in rural areas and smaller towns, where traditional infrastructure deployment is cost-prohibitive.”
Last week, SpaceX secured agreements with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to bring Starlink’s satellite internet services to India. As part of these arrangements, the telecom giants will distribute Starlink equipment through their retail networks, providing the U.S.-based satellite provider with a widespread on-the-ground presence.
However, the agreements remain subject to regulatory approval, with Starlink still awaiting government clearance to commence operations in India.
