The Kremlin announced on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump share a strong working relationship and are committed to gradually rebuilding strained U.S.-Russia relations.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the remarks following a phone conversation between the two leaders on Tuesday. During the call, Putin agreed to temporarily halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure but stopped short of approving the 30-day ceasefire Trump had proposed as an initial step toward a lasting peace agreement.
"I can say with great confidence that Presidents Putin and Trump have a solid understanding, mutual trust, and a shared commitment to restoring Russian-American ties step by step," Peskov stated.
He noted that while a direct phone line and video link between the U.S. and Russian presidents had existed for years, they were rarely utilized under Joe Biden’s administration. Putin, he added, hopes these channels will now be used more frequently.
"Russia and the United States are both major global players, and a great deal of damage was done to our relationship by previous U.S. administrations," Peskov remarked.
"Naturally, repairing these ties will require time, effort, and the personal dedication of both presidents. But at this moment, the strong determination of Presidents Putin and Trump remains the most reliable assurance that this path will be pursued."
Peskov further stated that discussions on the timing and format of the next round of U.S.-Russia engagements were scheduled for finalization within the next two days.
