Kochi: The KCBC Vigilance Commission has called on the government to take immediate corrective action against the Forest Department’s alleged anti-public measures. The commission emphasized that the government must swiftly rectify the department's actions, which they claim undermine the legal rights of citizens and suppress public protests.
Citing recent cases against Bishop George Punnakott and other public representatives, the commission pointed out that the Forest Department’s unchecked actions have repeatedly threatened the safety, dignity, and legal property rights of citizens across Kerala. They warned that such actions should not be allowed to persist, as they disregard the voices of local communities and fail to address critical issues such as human-wildlife conflict.
The commission urged the government to intervene and curb officials who misuse their authority under the pretext of enforcing forest and wildlife laws. Additionally, they demanded the withdrawal of cases filed against individuals participating in public protests, including those advocating for unrestricted movement along the Aluva-Munnar highway.
KCBC Vigilance Commission Chairman Bishop Dr.Yoohanon Mar Theodosius, Vice-Chairmen Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil, Bishop Dr. Ambrose Puthenveetil, and Secretary Fr. Dr. Michael Pulikkal CMI stressed the importance of ensuring that the Forest Department does not function as an entity that works against the interests of the people. They called for continuous government vigilance to prevent further instances of overreach and injustice.
