Indiana GOP Lawmaker Faces Vocal Backlash Over Trump’s Spending Cuts at Town Hall

U.S. Representative Victoria Spartz encountered a storm of boos, jeers, and shouts of "do your job" during a contentious town hall in her Indiana district on Friday, as she defended sweeping federal budget cuts. The event is the latest in a string of Republican-led town halls met with fierce voter opposition.

Despite House Speaker Mike Johnson advising GOP lawmakers to avoid such public meetings—following a wave of voter outrage over President Donald Trump’s mass firing of federal employees and defunding of government programs—Spartz pressed forward with the event. Johnson has blamed Democrats and activists for inciting disruptions at similar gatherings.

Spartz strongly backed the deep job and program cuts spearheaded by billionaire Elon Musk, whom Trump appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Repeating the Republican stance on fiscal responsibility, she insisted the measures aim to “eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.”

"This is your money!" Spartz emphasized over the crowd’s protests about lost government services. “If they can do more with less, they should. That’s government efficiency.”

However, her attempts to explain were often drowned out by an increasingly agitated audience. The Indianapolis-area town hall saw Spartz repeatedly trying to restore order, at one point appealing, “I want to have the conversation.”

By 7:30 p.m., nearly half the attendees had walked out, but chants of "do your job" continued to echo from outside the venue. Even as the meeting wrapped up, attendees were still shouting over Spartz.

Attempting to reassure the crowd, she stated, “President Trump was elected by the majority of Americans. I understand your frustrations with Elon Musk—I know you’re very frustrated—but I want to stay engaged.”

Despite the chaos, Spartz remained for the full two-hour session.
