KCBC Expresses Disappointment Over Kerala MPs' Stance on Waqf Bill; Catholic Congress Extends Sympathy to Opponents

The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) has conveyed its disappointment regarding the failure of Members of Parliament from Kerala to support the Waqf Amendment Bill. KCBC Deputy Secratary General, Father Thomas Tharayil, emphasized that the council's appeal to the MPs was aimed at addressing the concerns of the underprivileged and was not driven by any personal interests.

He clarified that the support for the bill was devoid of political motives and urged for a thorough examination of how the amendment could benefit areas like Munambam.

Similarly, the Syro-Malabar Church has expressed that the Waqf Amendment Bill brings relief to the people of Munambam. KCBC Joint Secratary, Father Antony Vadakkekara, highlighted that the government's decision to amend the law was made with an understanding of the people's grievances and was welcomed by the church.

He asserted that while the church supports initiatives that alleviate public suffering, it remains steadfast in opposing any actions that infringe upon minority rights.

Father Vadakkekara further elaborated that the concerns of the populace regarding the Waqf Amendment should be addressed, ensuring that minority rights are not compromised. He stressed that the church's stance is not an endorsement of any political party nor an opposition to any religious beliefs. Recognizing that dedicating land as Waqf is integral to certain religious practices, he acknowledged the importance of respecting such beliefs.

Drawing a parallel, he noted that just as appointing non-Hindus to Devaswom Boards could cause discomfort among Hindu devotees, placing non-Muslims in Waqf Boards might naturally lead to apprehensions among Muslims, which should be duly considered.

In conclusion, the church underscored its commitment to understanding and addressing the pain and concerns of the people, advocating for solutions that respect and uphold the rights and sentiments of all communities.
