The Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Great Britain has embarked on a deeply spiritual journey as it observes the Holy Week, commemorating the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Under the leadership of Bishop Mar Joseph Srampickal, the Eparchy has completed extensive preparations across its parishes and missions to ensure a meaningful and prayerful celebration for the faithful.
The Holy Week began with Palm Sunday services, where congregations gathered to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Faithful across various parishes participated in solemn processions holding blessed palm leaves, symbolizing peace and victory.
On Maundy Thursday, churches witnessed moving liturgical celebrations that included the Washing of the Feet ceremony. This symbolic act served as a reminder of Jesus' message of humility and service to others, especially significant during the Last Supper remembrance.
Good Friday was marked with meditative and solemn services. The faithful participated in the Stations of the Cross, reflecting on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. The day’s liturgy included the Veneration of the Cross and readings from the Passion narratives, drawing hundreds to prayer and reflection.
Holy Saturday featured the Easter Vigil, one of the most important liturgical services of the year. The ceremony began with the blessing of the new fire and the Paschal candle, followed by the proclamation of the Resurrection. The service culminated in the celebration of the Holy Qurbana, marking the joyous beginning of Easter.
This year’s Holy Week observances are particularly significant as they take place within the context of the Eparchy’s “Year of Spirituality,” launched on December 1, 2024. As part of this spiritual initiative, the Eparchy has encouraged continuous Bible reading, daily evening prayers, participation in the sacraments, and active involvement in the Holy Week ceremonies. These efforts aim to deepen the spiritual lives of the community and strengthen their relationship with God.
Bishop Srampickal has called on all members of the Syro-Malabar Catholic community in Great Britain to fully engage in the Holy Week observances. He emphasized their importance in the Church’s liturgical calendar and the opportunity they offer for personal and communal spiritual renewal.
The Eparchy’s dedication to preserving the rich liturgical traditions of the Syro-Malabar Church while addressing the spiritual needs of the diaspora community continues to serve as a strong pillar of faith for Catholics living in Great Britain.
