CF Industries announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Japanese energy giant JERA and investment powerhouse Mitsui to develop a $4 billion low-carbon ammonia production plant, marking a significant step in the clean energy transition.
Why It Matters:
The move aligns with the wave of green energy initiatives unleashed by the historic climate legislation passed in 2022 under President Joe Biden, which aims to supercharge U.S. investment in low-emission technologies. CF Industries' project is anticipated to benefit from the 45Q tax credit for capturing and storing approximately 2.3 million metric tons of CO₂ annually.
Project Details:
The facility will be built at CF Industries' Blue Point Complex in Louisiana and will feature autothermal reforming (ATR) technology along with carbon capture capabilities, including CO₂ dehydration and compression systems. The captured carbon will be transported and securely stored by 1PointFive, the carbon management subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum.
Low-carbon ammonia production is scheduled to commence in 2029.
