In a significant development for the Catholic community in Uganda, the Fort Portal Diocese has officially inaugurated the Kigarama Parish, marking its 36th parish establishment. The commissioning ceremony was led by Bishop Robert Muhiirwa, who emphasized the parish's role in enhancing evangelization efforts in the region.

The event witnessed a substantial turnout, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, government ministers, political figures, clergy members, and thousands of faithful. Prime Minister Nabbanja lauded the Catholic Church's initiatives aimed at combating poverty and improving community welfare, highlighting the importance of collaboration between religious institutions and the government in fostering socio-economic development.

The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation, hailing from the Muvattupuzha Province in Kerala, India, has been entrusted with the pastoral responsibilities of the new parish. Fathers Rinoj Vattakkalayil and Biju Pulinthanam from the CMI congregation have assumed leadership roles, overseeing the spiritual and administrative duties of the parish.

Kigarama Parish serves over 3,500 families, reflecting the substantial Catholic presence within the Fort Portal Diocese, which comprises approximately 1.1 million Catholics. The establishment of this parish is anticipated to significantly contribute to the spiritual growth and community development of the area.

This initiative aligns with the broader efforts of the Catholic Church in Uganda to expand its reach and address various socio-economic challenges. The government's recognition of the Church's contributions underscores the vital role that religious organizations play in national development.
