Scania Scoops Up Bankrupt Northvolt's Heavy-Duty Battery Unit in Strategic Power Move

In a bold recovery play, Volkswagen’s truck division Scania has sealed a deal to acquire the heavy industry battery arm of Northvolt, the once-promising Swedish battery maker that recently collapsed into bankruptcy.

The acquisition revives a transaction first floated in February, when Scania offered $6 million for Northvolt Systems Industrial—an offer that was stalled after Northvolt’s financial unraveling became one of Sweden’s largest corporate busts. The final purchase price remains undisclosed.

Northvolt Systems Industrial, employing around 260 people, designs and produces robust battery systems for construction, mining, and other industrial machinery from a facility in Poland, with R&D operations in Sweden. It now becomes the first piece of Northvolt’s assets to be offloaded since the bankruptcy.

Scania, both an investor in and customer of Northvolt, says the acquisition aligns with its long-term plan to expand into complementary technologies and sharpen its edge in the electrification of off-road vehicles.

“This move strengthens our electrification portfolio for demanding industrial applications,” Scania said in a statement, assuring that the newly acquired unit will carry on with operations uninterrupted.
