Pope Francis has passed away following a stroke that led to a coma and irreversible failure of his cardiovascular system, according to an official medical statement.
Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, head of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of Vatican City, issued the formal medical report, with the Holy See Press Office releasing the findings publicly on Monday evening.
The document confirms that the Pope’s death was verified through electrocardiographic thanatography. His medical history included severe respiratory issues—specifically, multimicrobial bilateral pneumonia and multiple bronchiectases—as well as chronic conditions such as hypertension and Type II diabetes.
"I officially attest," wrote Dr. Arcangeli, "that, to the best of my professional assessment, these are the definitive causes of death."
