Pope Francis’ Name Withdrawn from Official Liturgical Prayers

Following the passing of Pope Francis and the resulting vacancy in the Papal office, the Syro-Malabar Church has directed that his name be omitted from Holy Communion, vigil services, and other formal liturgical prayers. This was confirmed by Fr. Abraham, the Chancellor of the Church, during an announcement at Kavilpurayodam.

Until a new pontiff is elected and formally assumes office, only the names of the Major Archbishop, along with the respective Archdiocesan and Diocesan Superiors, should be included in the prayers that typically commemorate ecclesiastical leaders.

However, Fr. Abraham noted that Pope Francis' name may still be remembered in the diptychs—the prayers for the departed—offered during Holy Communion, allowing the faithful to honor his memory in the context of prayers for the deceased.
