U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Urges India and Pakistan to De-escalate Tensions Following Pahalgam Attack

In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in diplomatic outreach to both India and Pakistan, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and cooperation.

During a phone call with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, Secretary Rubio expressed condolences for the victims and reaffirmed the United States' commitment to collaborating with India in combating terrorism. He also encouraged India to work with Pakistan to reduce tensions and maintain regional peace and security.

In a separate conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Secretary Rubio urged Pakistan to condemn the April 22 attack and to cooperate fully in the investigation. He emphasized the importance of re-establishing direct communications between the two nations to prevent further escalation.

The Pahalgam attack has significantly strained India-Pakistan relations, with India accusing Pakistan of supporting the militants responsible, a claim Pakistan denies. In response to the attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian airlines.

The United States, maintaining strategic ties with both South Asian nuclear powers, has refrained from directly accusing Pakistan. Instead, it has called on both countries to restore direct communication and seek a responsible resolution to the crisis.

International actors, including China, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, are also attempting to mediate the situation. Analysts warn of the risks of miscalculation and the limited international leverage to deter potential military responses.

As tensions remain high, the international community continues to advocate for dialogue and restraint to prevent further conflict in the region.
