As preparations intensify in Rome for the upcoming conclave, a significant spiritual event unfolded at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, where 23 deacons from the Legionaries of Christ were ordained to the priesthood.
This diverse group included nine from Mexico, three from Colombia, two each from Germany, Brazil, and Venezuela, and one each from the United States, Spain, France, Argentina, and El Salvador. Their ordination marks a milestone for the global congregation, known for its evangelizing mission.
Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo, head of the Diocese of Cancun-Chetumal in Mexico, presided over the ceremony in place of Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo, who was occupied with his vital responsibilities amid the conclave. During the homily, Bishop Elizondo underscored the urgent need for priests who are “rooted in prayer, filled with zeal, courageous, and tireless in their mission.” He emphasized that priestly vocations are conceived, nurtured, and bear fruit through a life of prayer.
As of the end of 2024, the Legionaries of Christ count 1,309 members, including 1,033 priests—406 of whom hail from Mexico, making it the congregation’s largest source of clergy. The recent ordinations further affirm the community’s commitment to its missionary calling during a pivotal moment for the Catholic Church.
