“Targeting Terror, Not Escalation”: Why India Hit Pakistan’s Air Defence Today

India’s recent military action under Operation Sindoor was aimed squarely at dismantling terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, without provoking further military escalation. The operation targeted 24 terrorist hubs affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Indian forces, according to an official statement, were careful to avoid striking any Pakistani military sites, highlighting a measured and restrained approach.

However, Pakistan’s reaction quickly raised the stakes. In a significant escalation, it launched drones and missiles at several military locations across northern and western India, including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, and Bhuj. These attempted strikes were intercepted by India’s integrated air defence and counter-drone systems, with debris recovered confirming Pakistan’s involvement.

In response to this provocation, India this morning took precise action, targeting Pakistani air defence systems at multiple locations, successfully disabling at least one installation in Lahore. According to Indian authorities, the retaliation matched Pakistan’s actions in intensity and remained confined to the military domain, avoiding any broader escalation.

On the ground, Pakistan has also increased artillery shelling across sectors of Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control. The government confirmed the tragic loss of 16 civilian lives, including children and women, due to this unprovoked shelling. India, once again, was compelled to respond to halt the aggression and restore stability along the border.

Operation Sindoor was initiated in the wake of the brutal April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which 25 Indian tourists and a local resident were killed. Responsibility was claimed by The Resistance Front, a known front for Lashkar-e-Taiba. Evidence, including intercepted communications, directly linked the attack’s planning and execution to operatives in Pakistan.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a press briefing, emphasized that despite the gravity of the attack, Pakistan had taken no visible steps to dismantle terror networks operating from its soil. Instead, it responded with denials and counter-allegations. Intelligence suggested further terror plots were underway, prompting India to act swiftly to prevent future attacks.

Today’s strikes, Mr. Misri said, were deliberate, proportionate, and focused solely on terror infrastructure, underscoring India’s position: self-defence, not escalation. The government reiterated its stance that any attack on India’s military installations will be met with a firm and equivalent response, but stressed that the broader goal remains de-escalation—provided Pakistan chooses the path of peace.
