New Delhi: In a clear and composed response to heightened tensions along the border, India has thwarted Pakistan’s overnight missile and drone offensive aimed at military sites in northern and western India. The hostile projectiles were intercepted and neutralised using India's Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and advanced air defence mechanisms.
Following this defensive action, India launched a targeted military response early this morning, striking Pakistani air defence installations, including those in and around Lahore. The operation was carried out in alignment with India's strategic posture: precise, restrained, and intended to avoid escalation.
India’s full statement outlines the context and the actions taken:
During a press briefing on Operation SINDOOR on May 7, 2025, India had clearly described its earlier response as deliberate and proportionate, emphasizing that no offensive action had been taken against Pakistan’s military facilities. However, India had also made it unequivocally clear that any assault on its own military infrastructure would warrant an appropriate and timely retaliation.
On the night of May 7-8, 2025, Pakistan attempted to strike multiple Indian military positions across a wide area, including locations such as Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, and Bhuj. These threats were effectively intercepted by India’s air defence network. Wreckage from the intercepted drones and missiles is currently being recovered, confirming the origin and intent of the attack.
In response, Indian forces executed precise strikes on Pakistani air defence radars and systems, maintaining parity in scope and intensity. Intelligence reports indicate that an air defence setup near Lahore was successfully neutralised.
Simultaneously, Pakistan escalated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC), intensifying its use of mortars and heavy artillery in multiple sectors, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Rajouri. Tragically, these unprovoked attacks have resulted in the deaths of sixteen civilians, among them three women and five children.
India’s forces were compelled to return fire to suppress these provocations and restore calm in the affected areas.
Concluding its statement, the Indian Armed Forces reiterated their continued commitment to avoiding escalation a stance that will be upheld as long as Pakistan respects the same principle.
