Vatican City: “From Saint Peter to his ‘unworthy successor,’ the Pope is nothing more than a humble servant of God and of his brothers and sisters,” declared Pope Leo XIV, addressing the College of Cardinals at the Vatican on May 10, just three days after his election as the 267th successor of the Apostle Peter.
In his heartfelt message, Pope Leo XIV underscored the spiritual weight of the Petrine office, emphasizing that he does not stand alone in carrying the great responsibility entrusted to him. Gazing upon the gathered cardinals, he expressed comfort and strength in their presence, which, he said, is a visible reminder that the Lord walks with him and that he is supported by close companions in mission.
Drawing inspiration from the lives of his predecessors, especially the late Pope Francis, Pope Leo reflected on how they embodied the essence of the papacy — one of service, humility, and unwavering dedication to the people of God. “The Pope,” he said, “is not a sovereign, but a servant called to lead by lowering himself in love and obedience.”
With moving sincerity, Pope Leo XIV shared that he draws his strength from divine grace, from the prayers of the faithful across the world, and from the brotherhood and collaboration of the cardinals who now stand by his side. Their spiritual closeness and counsel, he said, are essential to navigating a path that is far greater than any single person can bear alone.
He did not forget those absent from the gathering due to illness or infirmity, assuring them of his solidarity and prayerful communion. In their absence, he said, he still feels united with them in heart and spirit, as together they form one body in Christ.
Reflecting on the richness of the Church, Pope Leo praised its beauty as a family of diverse members held together by one Head — Christ, the Shepherd and Guardian of souls. This unity in diversity, he said, is a reflection of God’s own love and a witness to the world of the Church’s living truth.
With deep gratitude, Pope Leo XIV thanked Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, and Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, the Camerlengo, for their faithful service during the period of papal vacancy. Their leadership, he said, ensured a seamless transition and stability within the Church.
As he begins his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV’s words struck a chord of humility, resolve, and deep trust in God’s providence. His message made clear that the journey ahead will not be walked alone, but in communion — with fellow cardinals, with the People of God, and with the Spirit that animates the Church in every age.
Pope Leo XIV’s first official audience with the cardinals not only set the tone for his pontificate but also reaffirmed his pastoral heart — one that seeks to serve, not to be served, and to lead the Church not by command, but by compassion.
