Pakistan Allegedly Targets Golden Temple with Missile; Indian Army Intercepts, Averts Major Tragedy

On the night of May 8, 2025, the Indian Army reported intercepting a Pakistani missile aimed at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. Major General Karthik C. Sheshadri stated that Pakistan launched drones and long-range missiles targeting the sacred Sikh site, but India's air defense systems successfully neutralized the threats, preventing any damage to the temple.

Debris from the intercepted missile was found in villages near Amritsar, including Chitawar and Pandol, with fragments landing on rooftops and fields. The Indian Air Defence system's timely response ensured no casualties occurred.

In retaliation, India conducted precision strikes under "Operation Sindoor," targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These actions were in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths and was linked to cross-border operatives.

The Indian government condemned Pakistan's alleged attacks on religious sites, including the Golden Temple, labeling them as attempts to incite communal tensions. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri dismissed Pakistan's claims as "lame attempts" to divide India and emphasized the nation's commitment to protecting its sovereignty and cultural heritage.

As tensions escalate, international observers express concern over the potential for further conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation and restore stability in the region.
