Catholic Congress Sends Strong Message to Political Establishment: Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany

The recently concluded two-day International Catholic Congress in Palakkad served as a powerful signal to India’s political parties, according to Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany of Thalassery, who inaugurated the landmark event. "Christians in Kerala are not standing alone," he affirmed, emphasizing a renewed unity across the Christian community on political, social, and agricultural matters.

Archbishop Pamplany underscored that the massive turnout at the Congress’ grand finale—attended by tens of thousands—was a resounding answer to skeptics who question the influence of religious leaders. “This gathering proves that when bishops and priests speak, the people do listen,” he declared.

Global Catholic Congress President Prof. Rajeev Kochuparambil, who chaired the sessions, echoed this sentiment, stating that “the Church's political engagement is one of survival, where the concerns of a single diocese become the concern of the entire faith community.”

Delivering the keynote address, Palakkad Bishop Mar Peter Kochupurakkal further stressed the importance of collective voice and action. Bishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Manathodath, offering his birthday reflections, reminded attendees that the Christian community is rational, mature, and not to be used as anyone’s political tool. He also noted that the Catholic Congress still has significant milestones ahead.

The event witnessed contributions from several key leaders and speakers including Rashtradeepika Ltd. MD Fr. Michael Vettikat, AKC Global Director Dr. Philip Kaviyil, Global Secretary Dr. Josukutty J. Oglayil, Diocesan President Adv. Bobby Bastin, and others. Each spoke on the evolving role of the Catholic community in contemporary civic and political life.

The vote of thanks was extended by Diocesan General Secretary Jijo Arakkal. Political and social justice resolutions were presented by Adv. Tony Punchakunnel and Thomas Antony, respectively.

The conference drew participation from across India and internationally, including delegates and activists from France, Australia, the UK, Ireland, the United States, Italy, and various Asian nations. It concluded with the announcement that the next International Catholic Congress will be hosted by the Archdiocese of Thalassery.
