Catholic Congress Affirms Christians Are Not Bargaining Chips in Politics

Palakkad: The political resolution passed at the Catholic Congress emphasizes that the Christian Church played a pivotal role in Kerala’s renaissance by establishing churches that doubled as educational hubs, driving monumental progress in education and uplifting marginalized communities irrespective of caste, creed, or class. Yet today, Christians find themselves struggling for survival. Declining agricultural incomes, attacks by wild animals, and climate change have forced farmers to abandon their fields, while many young people are emigrating in search of better opportunities.

The resolution highlights the precarious state of the Christian community, pointing out that political parties largely ignore the hardships Christians face. Despite the passage of years since the J.B. Koshy Commission submitted its report, the government has been notably silent and inactive regarding its recommendations.

A stern warning was issued: Christians are prepared to exercise their voting power judiciously. The Catholic Church pledges to support leaders who earnestly implement the J.B. Koshy Commission’s proposals, repeal the current Wildlife Protection Act to grant farmers the right to defend their lands from wild animals, allocate minority rights and benefits proportionate to population, take firm action against all intoxicants, and uphold the secular values enshrined in the Constitution.

The Catholic Congress’s resolution underscores that true national strength will arise from empowering communities and fostering collective progress for the country.
