Pope Leo XIV Urges Youth and Universities: "Forge Bridges for Justice and the Earth"

Pope Leo XIV Urges Youth and Universities:

In a heartfelt videomessage commemorating the 10th anniversary of Laudato si’, Pope Leo XIV extended a powerful call to action to academic institutions worldwide, encouraging them to deepen their commitment to ecological and social justice in the spirit of synodality.

Speaking to the Network of Universities for the Care of Our Common Home—gathered at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro—the Pope applauded their efforts to foster collaborative discernment as the world prepares for the upcoming COP30 climate summit.

He praised the Network's forward-thinking reflections on reconciling “public debt with ecological debt,” a theme central to his recent message for the World Day of Peace. This dual challenge, Pope Leo suggested, demands a united, hopeful response grounded in responsibility and compassion.

Framing this anniversary year as a “Jubilee of Hope,” the Pope encouraged young participants to pursue their ecological and social missions with renewed energy. “This is a year not only to reflect, but to act—with hope as your compass,” he urged.

In a direct appeal to university leaders, Pope Leo called upon rectors to become "builders of bridges" across continents and cultures. “Forge connections between the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula,” he said, “and commit to advancing justice—ecological, social, and environmental.” His message emphasized the role of academia in healing divides and fostering cooperation for the common good.

Pope Leo XIV concluded his address with heartfelt gratitude for the dedication and service shown by the gathered educators and students. “Thank you for your commitment, your ideas, and your tireless work,” he said warmly.

As his final exhortation, he urged all participants to continue “building bridges” wherever they go—bridges that unite people, protect creation, and pursue justice across all boundaries.
