Taipei: In a bold assertion of Taiwan's sovereignty, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung declared that China lacks the authority to determine Taiwan's status as a nation. Speaking at a press conference marking the first anniversary of President Lai Ching-te's administration, Lin emphasized Taiwan's democratic governance and its right to self-identify.
"Whether or not Taiwan is a country is not up to Wang Yi, nor the People's Republic of China, to say," Lin stated, referencing his Chinese counterpart. He highlighted that Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, has its own government and democratic processes, distinguishing it from the People's Republic of China.
Lin expressed openness to dialogue, suggesting that a simple handshake with Wang Yi could be a starting point for improved relations. However, he noted that previous offers for talks have been rebuffed by Beijing, which continues to label President Lai as a separatist.
The minister's remarks come amid heightened tensions, with China increasing military activities near Taiwan. Despite these pressures, Taiwan remains steadfast in its pursuit of international recognition and participation in global organizations, asserting its identity on the world stage.
