Vatican City: In a moment of immense pride for the Alappuzha diocese, Fr. Boya Johnny has been bestowed with the prestigious title of Pope’s Chaplain—an honor that elevates him to the rank of Monsignor within the Catholic Church. The announcement, made by the Vatican on May 21, was formally communicated to Bishop Rev. James Anaparambil of Alappuzha.
This elevation recognizes Fr. Boya’s exemplary service in the realm of Vatican diplomacy. As Pope’s Chaplain, Fr. Boya will carry the honorary title “Monsignor” before his name and don the distinctive red sash that symbolizes this papal honor.
Speaking from Burkina Faso, where he currently serves at the Apostolic Nunciature, Fr. Boya expressed heartfelt gratitude: “This isn’t something achieved by merit alone—it is the grace of God. I thank the Holy Father and the Lord above for this unexpected blessing.” He confirmed that he will continue his diplomatic and pastoral duties in Burkina Faso until further instructions are received regarding his transfer.
A native of Vellappally Canal Ward in Alappuzha and the son of the late John and Lily Veliyil, Fr. Boya was ordained a priest on September 18, 2014. He later pursued advanced studies at the Vatican, which led to his appointment to the Holy See’s diplomatic service in January 2021. Since then, he has served as Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature to Burkina Faso and Niger, and for the past seven months, he has been functioning as the Holy See’s representative to Burkina Faso.
His new title is not just an honor for him personally but a moment of great pride for the Indian Catholic community and the diocese of Alappuzha.
