Changanassery: The announcement of the beatification of Mar Mathew Makil, who served as Vicar Apostolic of Changanassery from 1896 to 1911, has been received with immense joy and reverence by the Archdiocese. Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil expressed his heartfelt elation, describing the moment as a divinely blessed chapter in the spiritual journey of the Archdiocese of Changanassery.
Archbishop Tharayil emphasized the rich spiritual legacy of the Archdiocese, which has been shepherded by towering figures of faith. With Mar Thomas Kurialassery already beatified and Mar Mathew Kavukatt recognized as a Servant of God, the path to sainthood seems luminous for the leadership lineage of the diocese. “We continue to pray fervently that all three may soon be officially recognized as saints,” the Archbishop said.
He reflected on the immense contributions of Mar Makil, particularly noting his foundational role in establishing the Congregation of the Adoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These congregations have since become integral to the spiritual and social fabric of the Church in Kerala and beyond.
One of Mar Makil's most remarkable legacies was the drafting of the Decree Book, a meticulous codification of ecclesiastical norms and procedures that served as the legal backbone of the Vicariate. Archbishop Tharayil pointed out that this initiative laid the groundwork for a more structured and disciplined administration of Church affairs during a crucial phase of growth.
Leading two vicariates simultaneously was a challenge that Mar Makil took up with humility and resolve. Archbishop Tharayil highlighted the pastoral sensitivity and spiritual maturity with which Mar Makil guided his flock, especially in an era marked by both colonial pressures and ecclesial transitions.
“This beatification is not just a personal honour for Mar Makil, but a profound affirmation of the spiritual heritage of Changanassery,” the Archbishop said. “It reminds us of our roots and inspires us to walk with greater faith and commitment in the footsteps of our holy predecessors.”
As preparations begin for the beatification ceremony, the faithful of the Archdiocese are uniting in prayer and thanksgiving. The event is expected to renew the spiritual vigor of the community and encourage deeper devotion among believers, especially the youth who now have a renewed model of holiness to emulate.
