Gaza City: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the death of Mohammed Sinwar, a senior Hamas military leader and younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, in a meticulously planned operation conducted on May 13, 2025. The strike targeted a fortified tunnel complex beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
According to IDF statements, the operation was the culmination of months of intelligence gathering and coordination among Israeli security agencies. Utilizing advanced surveillance and precision-guided munitions, the IDF aimed to dismantle a key Hamas command center situated underground. The strike reportedly resulted in the deaths of 28 individuals, including Mohammed Sinwar and Muhammad Shabana, commander of Hamas's Rafah brigade.
Mohammed Sinwar had risen through the ranks of Hamas's military wing, assuming leadership following the deaths of prominent figures such as Mohammed Deif and his brother Yahya Sinwar. He was considered instrumental in orchestrating operations against Israel and had been a primary target for Israeli forces.
The IDF emphasized that the operation was conducted with measures to minimize civilian casualties, despite the challenges posed by Hamas's use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes. The tunnel network targeted was believed to be a significant component of Hamas's operational capabilities in the region.
As of now, Hamas has not issued an official statement confirming or denying the death of Mohammed Sinwar. The situation remains tense, with ongoing concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict on the civilian population in Gaza.
