Pope Leo XIV at Regina Coeli: A Prayerful Plea for Families Torn by War

Vatican City: In a heartfelt address during the Regina Coeli prayer at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV turned global attention to families enduring the ravages of war, particularly in the Middle East, Ukraine, and other conflict-stricken regions. The Pope’s words came as he welcomed families from 131 nations attending the Jubilee of Families, Children, Grandparents, and the Elderly.

Reflecting on the Feast of the Ascension, Pope Leo called on the faithful to entrust suffering families to the Virgin Mary, praying that “the Mother of God may help us move forward on the path of peace.” His appeal resonated strongly as thousands gathered to celebrate the Eucharistic liturgy and the value of family life.

The Pontiff praised children for the joy and hope they bring and described families as “little domestic churches” where the faith is both nurtured and handed down. Quoting Saint John Paul II’s Gratissimam Sane, he reminded listeners that families are born from the same divine love with which the Creator embraces the world. “May faith, hope, and love always flourish in our families,” he said, giving special recognition to grandparents and the elderly as living examples of enduring faith and wisdom for younger generations.

The Pope also highlighted the significance of the Solemnity of the Ascension, observed on this Sunday in many parts of the world. He called it “a beautiful feast” that lifts the Christian gaze toward heaven and the ultimate destination of our earthly pilgrimage.

During his address, Pope Leo recalled the recent beatification of Sister Cristofora Klomfass and fourteen fellow Sisters of the Congregation of Saint Catherine, Virgin and Martyr, who were killed in Poland in 1945 amid violence following the Red Army's invasion. Despite the threats of war and religious persecution, these sisters courageously continued their care for the sick and orphaned. The Pope entrusted to their intercession all women religious serving across the globe with similar devotion and sacrifice.

Marking the 59th World Day of Social Communications, Pope Leo extended his gratitude to journalists and media professionals. He praised their role in defending ethical integrity and supporting families in their responsibility to educate and guide the next generation. In closing, the Pope’s message echoed a vision of unity and peace—a call to families everywhere to remain beacons of hope, faith, and resilience amid a fractured world.
