Thiruvananthapuram: In a progressive move aimed at strengthening student safety and ensuring their voices are heard, Kerala Police has announced the installation of complaint boxes in all schools across the state, starting from the upcoming academic year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create a safer, more transparent, and responsive environment within educational institutions.
The complaint boxes will be introduced under the supervision of the School Protection Group (SPG), an entity recently formed with police leadership dedicated to safeguarding students and addressing their concerns effectively. Each school will be assigned a designated police officer from the local police station, who will oversee the management of these complaint boxes and ensure timely responses to grievances.
Complaints submitted via the boxes will be collected and reviewed monthly by the station house officer or the designated officer in charge, who will conduct this process in the presence of the school principal. This monthly review is designed to guarantee transparency and encourage collaborative problem-solving between the police and school administration. Additionally, the complaint boxes will be physically checked weekly during the school opening and then monthly after the first three months of implementation, ensuring continuous vigilance.
To maintain trust and encourage open communication, confidentiality will be strictly preserved. Issues that can be resolved within the school’s capacity will be addressed locally, fostering an environment where students feel safe and supported. However, complaints involving serious concerns or requiring legal intervention will be escalated appropriately, with the police ready to initiate necessary legal action. Matters that fall outside the jurisdiction of the police will be referred to the relevant government departments to ensure a comprehensive response.
This innovative approach underscores Kerala Police’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and well-being within the educational framework. By providing students with a safe channel to report their concerns and grievances, the police and schools together aim to build trust and promote a culture of safety, respect, and accountability in Kerala’s schools.
As the academic year approaches, this initiative is poised to transform how student issues are addressed, ensuring that young voices are no longer overlooked but are heard, respected, and acted upon.
