Chicago to Honor Hometown Hero Pope Leo XIV with Grand Celebration at Rate Field

Chicago: The Archdiocese of Chicago is preparing a historic celebration to honor the election of Pope Leo XIV, a native of the city, with a large-scale gathering at Rate Field, the home stadium of Major League Baseball’s Chicago White Sox.

In a remarkable show of hometown pride, Chicago will mark the papal election with a day dedicated to prayer, music, and community. The event, taking place Saturday, June 14, is being organized by the Archdiocese as a tribute to the first Chicagoan to ascend to the papacy. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m., with the main program commencing at 2:30 p.m. The day will conclude with a solemn Holy Mass led by Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, at 4:00 p.m.

Describing the gathering as a moment of “faith, unity, and community,” the Archdiocese shared details on social media, writing on X: "Join us at Rate Field—Home of the @WhiteSox—for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of the election of Pope Leo XIV on June 14. Get your tickets now!" Tickets are available via Ticketmaster for just $5.

Although Pope Leo XIV will not be physically present, he will join the event virtually from Rome, with a special video message to be broadcast to attendees.

Cardinal Cupich has extended a heartfelt invitation to all, releasing a video encouraging the faithful to come together in celebration of this historic moment. Interest in the event has been overwhelming; more than 9,000 tickets were claimed within the first 15 minutes, ballooning to 20,000 by the end of the first day.
