Kochi: The Synodal Commission for Families, Laity, and Life of the Syro-Malabar Church recently held a key session, bringing together leaders of multiple sub-commissions working across the domains of Catholic Congress, Family Apostolate, Matruvedi, Family Collective, Prolife, and Laity Forums. The gathering was inaugurated by Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, who emphasized the pressing relevance of the Commission’s work in today’s world, where the essence of life and value-based living are increasingly overshadowed by academic and professional pressures.
The meeting was chaired by Mar George Madathikandathil and presided over with the presence of Episcopal members Mar John Nellikunnel and Mar Peter Kochupurackal. The General Secretary, Fr. Dr. Arun Kalamattathil, formally welcomed the participants, setting the tone for a session rich in reflection and planning.
In his inaugural address, Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil called upon the Lay Commission to take a leadership role in guiding both the Church and society. He expressed concern over the declining emphasis on life-centered education and ethical living, stating that the Church must now more than ever focus on forming individuals rooted in values, not just in academic achievement.
The episcopal members, offering pastoral insights, urged the Commission to function with greater unity among its sub-groups, ensuring their efforts are harmonized for broader impact. During the session, each sub-commission outlined its planned initiatives for the upcoming year, leading to an in-depth discussion on goals and execution strategies.
A major resolution passed by the Commission was the need to intensify awareness campaigns and introduce tangible actions against the rising tide of social evils. These include practices and ideologies that erode the dignity of human life, undermine the family structure, and contradict the foundational teachings of the Church.
In conclusion, Fr. Philip Kaviyil offered words of appreciation and thanks, encouraging continued collaboration and spiritual commitment. The session reaffirmed the role of the Synodal Commission as a beacon of moral guidance and proactive faith leadership in today’s changing world.
