Delhi Airport Begins Runway Overhaul; 114 Daily Flights to Be Cancelled for Three Months

New Delhi: Major renovation work is set to begin at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, prompting the cancellation of over a hundred daily flights for a three-month period. Starting June 15 and continuing until September 15, approximately 114 flights per day will be suspended to facilitate the refurbishment of one of the airport’s key runways.

Originally planned for a quieter season to avoid operational disruptions, the renovation has now been moved to mid-year due to rising traffic demands. The decision comes amid concerns over recurring disruptions caused by dense fog during Delhi’s winter months, which severely impacts flight operations. Authorities hope the timely completion of this work will help mitigate weather-related delays in the future.

Currently, Delhi airport operates around 1,450 flights each day using four runways and two main terminals—T1 and T3. Terminal 1 remains closed for separate maintenance work. During the renovation phase, air traffic at the airport is expected to decrease by roughly 7.5%.

In total, around 200 flights will be affected during the period. While 114 will be outright cancelled, another 86 are expected to be rescheduled. Airport authorities have assured that all necessary upgrades will be completed before the onset of the fog season, aiming to enhance efficiency and passenger safety during low-visibility conditions.
