DRC Bishops Reaffirm Commitment to Peace Amid Government Criticism

Vatican City: The Bishops of the Democratic Republic of Congo have reiterated their unwavering dedication to peace, reconciliation, and national unity, following accusations from Vice Prime Minister and Transport Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba. During a 9 June press briefing, Bemba criticized the Catholic hierarchy, alleging that their actions risk destabilizing the country—claims the Church considers harmful to national cohesion.

In a firm response issued on 12 June, the National Episcopal Conference of the Congo (CENCO) voiced serious concern that such remarks, coming from a top government official, could endanger the fragile climate of trust essential for harmonious coexistence.

Upholding its prophetic role, the Catholic Church in the DRC emphasized its commitment to being a voice for peace and justice. The Bishops invited the faithful to pray for Minister Bemba, “that the Spirit of peace may enlighten and guide him.”

In their message, CENCO called on the Congolese population to resist manipulation, hateful rhetoric, and any attempt to sow discord. “Let us remain united, vigilant, and committed to safeguarding the bonds of social unity that our nation desperately needs,” the bishops appealed.

Expressing disappointment, the Bishops noted that neither the Prosecutor General of the Supreme Court nor the National Assembly had taken up the issue despite the seriousness of the Minister’s statements. This institutional silence, they warned, risks further eroding the foundations of peace and mutual trust in an already tense socio-political climate.

Despite the sharp criticism directed at them, the Congolese Bishops reaffirmed their spiritual mission. They continue to entrust the future of their nation to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying that peace, reconciliation, and unity may take root across the land.

As the DRC faces mounting internal tensions, the Catholic Church stands firm in its resolve to act as a moral compass—urging dialogue over division, and unity over discord.
