Thoppumpady: In a powerful display of unified resolve, the Catholic dioceses of Kochi and Alappuzha are mobilizing coastal communities for an intensified "strong strike" demanding immediate and lasting solutions to the severe sea erosion plaguing the Kannamali, Cheriyakadavu, and Kattiparamba areas. This decisive action follows a joint meeting of priests, organizational office bearers, and lay representatives, convened by Care Chellanam Kochi and jointly led by the two dioceses.
The joint assembly, presided over by Mon. Shyju Pariyathusery and inaugurated by Alappuzha Vicar General Mon. Joy Puthenveetil, underscored the urgent need for intervention. Speakers at the meeting, including KRL CC Deputy Secretary Rev. Dr. Jiju Arakkathara, Joseph Jude, Rev. Dr. Johnny Xavier Puthukkad, Fr. Joppan Andissery, Fr. Solomon Charangat, Care Chellanam Convener T.A. Dolphin, KLCA State General Secretary Biju Josey Karumancherry, Paily Alungal, and Babu Kaliparambil, highlighted the devastating impact of the erosion on local livelihoods and homes.
As part of the escalating agitation, solemn "proclamation processions" are slated to be held throughout the affected coastal belt today, signaling the communities' deep distress and unwavering determination. The core of the protest will culminate on Thursday, June 20, when priests from both the Kochi and Alappuzha dioceses will undertake a symbolic one-day hunger strike at the Thoppumpady BOT junction. This poignant act of protest will be spearheaded by the Vicar Generals of both dioceses, emphasizing the Church's commitment to standing in solidarity with its vulnerable coastal flock.
To ensure effective leadership for the hunger strike, a dedicated committee has been appointed. Rev. Dr. Johnny Xavier Puthukkad will serve as Chairman, with Fr. Solomon Charangat as Vice Chairman, and Fr. Antony Kuzhivelil as Convener. Santhosh Kodiyanad, Sophie Raju, and Emmanuel, former State President of KCYM, have been named as joint conveners, forming a robust leadership team for the protest. The dioceses and the broader community are resolute in their demand for concrete measures to protect their ancestral lands and prevent further displacement caused by the relentless sea erosion.
