Alappuzha: A peaceful but powerful protest has begun along Kerala’s coastline as coastal communities raise their collective voice demanding urgent action for their safety and survival. The fasting strike, spearheaded by the Alappuzha and Cochin dioceses, officially began under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Joy Puthenveetil, Vicar General of Alappuzha, at a protest gathering named ‘Puthenveetil’.
The demonstration, taking place with the support of clergy, laity, and concerned citizens, is centered around key demands: robust coastal protection measures, urgent government funding for sea wall construction, and the immediate completion of the tetrapod barrier from Puthen Thodu to Fort Kochi.
Rev. Dr. Joy, addressing the gathering, emphasized that this is not just a protest it is a cry for justice from thousands whose homes and lives are at constant risk due to relentless sea erosion. “Our people cannot wait any longer while their land disappears into the waves,” he stated, urging authorities to prioritize the safety and dignity of the coastal population.
Organizers pointed out that despite repeated pleas and partial progress, the full stretch of the tetrapod sea wall remains incomplete, leaving vulnerable pockets along the coast dangerously exposed. They called upon the state and central governments to immediately allocate sufficient funds and ensure that coastal defense infrastructure is completed without further delay.
The strike is expected to continue until concrete assurances are given. It reflects a growing sense of urgency and frustration among coastal dwellers, who say they are paying the price for governmental apathy in the face of climate threats and environmental neglect.
