Pope Leo XIV to Augustinian Sisters: Without Truth, Culture Becomes a Weapon of Power

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV, addressing the Augustinian Sisters Servants of Jesus and Mary during an audience in the Apostolic Palace on Saturday, cautioned against a world where culture is separated from truth, warning that it risks becoming an instrument manipulated by the powerful. "When truth is missing, culture no longer enlightens—it enslaves," he said. "It no longer frees consciences, but manipulates them according to market interests, passing trends, or superficial success."

Urging the Sisters to stay rooted in Christ, the Pope stressed that Christ is “the way, the truth, and the life,” and therefore the foundation for all cultural and educational efforts. “Let Christ be the lens through which all your initiatives take shape,” he encouraged.

Drawing inspiration from the life of their foundress, Venerable Maria Teresa Spinelli, Pope Leo urged the Sisters to embody patience amid trials and to be fearless in their vocation. “In your struggles, God proves His faithfulness. Let this give you the strength to raise minds and hearts that are wise, that listen, and that carry a deep compassion for humanity,” he said.

The Sisters, who were founded in 1827 and are now active in nine countries, are especially known for their educational work, outreach to marginalized youth and women, and healthcare services. The Pope recognized their ongoing commitment to these missions and commended their efforts to remain faithful to their charism in today’s complex cultural climate.

Pope Leo also recommended the Sisters revisit St. Augustine’s De Magistro, highlighting its message that all external teaching must ultimately guide people to Jesus the true teacher within. “Education is not just about information, but formation,” the Pope reminded them. “And it must always lead the soul closer to Christ.”

As the cause for canonization of their foundress continues, Pope Leo urged the Sisters to view their daily service as a path of sanctification. “Your name Servants of Jesus and Mary is more than a title; it is a reminder that your work must be constantly guided by the Lord and our Blessed Mother,” he said. “Let your consecration be your strength, and may your devotion nourish your mission.”

In closing, Pope Leo XIV encouraged the Sisters to continue living lives of joyful witness in a world desperately in need of truth, compassion, and unwavering faith.
