Castel Gandolfo: In a forward looking move underscoring the Vatican’s commitment to sustainability, Pope Leo XIV has received two state-of-the-art electric vehicles specifically engineered to support his apostolic travels around the world. The custom-built EVs, developed by Italian innovation company Exelentia in partnership with the Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City State, were officially presented to the Pontiff during a private meeting on July 3 at the serene Pontifical Villas in Castel Gandolfo.
According to a press release issued by the Governatorate of Vatican City on July 6, these vehicles are the product of an intricate blend of modern engineering and traditional craftsmanship. Described as silent and emission-free, the compact electric models are specifically tailored to accompany the Pope on long-distance missions, with the unique advantage of being air-transportable without requiring disassembly.
Each vehicle showcases custom modifications to ensure the Pope’s comfort and safety. The bodywork has been enhanced with a front handle and specially designed lateral supports beneath the armrests innovations that ease the process of boarding and exiting while maintaining stability during movement. Every design detail reflects the Pope’s pastoral mobility needs, particularly for public appearances and pastoral outreach abroad.
The Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City, which oversees papal security, closely monitored each phase of the vehicle's creation. Their focus was on operational excellence ensuring the new additions provide agility and utmost protection during the Pope’s international travels.
Adding another layer of precision to the project, ITA Airways the official carrier for the Pontiff’s overseas visits—worked closely with Exelentia and the Vatican engineers to finalize dimensions and structural specifications, ensuring seamless integration with aircraft cargo requirements.
These electric vehicles symbolize more than technological innovation; they reflect a deepened commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible travel. Pope Leo XIV’s embrace of this initiative aligns with his consistent advocacy for ecological conversion and sustainable development, themes that have shaped much of his pontificate.
In a quiet yet symbolic gesture, the reception of these vehicles at Castel Gandolfo marks another step toward a greener, more conscious Church one that journeys forward not only in spirit but also in harmony with creation.
