Former Chaldean Church Archbishop Dr. Mar Aprem Passes Away at 85

Thrissur: A solemn chapter has closed in the history of the Chaldean Syrian Church in India with the passing of Dr. Mar Aprem, former Archbishop and one of the most distinguished ecclesiastical leaders of the East. The 85-year-old prelate breathed his last at Sun Hospital in Thrissur, where he had been under treatment for age-related ailments.

Known for his profound theological wisdom and deep-rooted pastoral care, Mar Aprem shepherded the Chaldean Church for over five decades. At just 28, he was consecrated as Metropolitan, a role he embraced with grace and clarity of vision. His ecclesiastical journey officially began with his enthronement in Baghdad in 1968, but his spiritual and administrative heart remained centered in Thrissur, the Indian headquarters of the Chaldean Church.

Even after stepping down from active leadership, the Archbishop remained a beloved and revered figure, continuing to inspire the faithful through his writings, teachings, and public engagements. His voice resonated not only in ecclesial circles but also among the broader community, where he was admired for his scholarship, humility, and ecumenical openness.

A health bulletin issued by Metropolitan Mar Augin Kuriakose on July 5 had already indicated a significant deterioration in Mar Aprem’s condition, requesting the faithful to uphold him in their prayers.

Funeral arrangements are underway and will be finalized upon the arrival of senior bishops and dignitaries of the Church from various parts of the world. The Chaldean community mourns the loss of a spiritual giant whose legacy will continue to shape its path for generations.
