Thrissur: The Syro-Malabar Church stands in mourning following the passing of Mar Aprem Thirumeni, Metropolitan of the Chaldean-Syrian Church of All India, with Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil calling it a “monumental loss” not only to the Church but to the spiritual and cultural fabric of Kerala.
In a deeply moving condolence message, Mar Raphael Thattil, the spiritual head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, remembered Mar Aprem Thirumeni as a towering presence who shaped generations through his vision, scholarship, and unwavering leadership. “He was not merely a bishop; he was a builder of bridges between tradition and modernity, between cultures and communities,” said the Major Archbishop.
Mar Aprem, who ascended to the rank of Metropolitan at a notably young age, was hailed for his dynamic leadership and ecclesiastical stewardship. Thrissur, which had long been his spiritual home, bore witness to his vibrant presence across liturgical, theological, literary, and ecumenical platforms. Archbishop Thattil noted that Mar Aprem’s contributions went beyond pastoral leadership, extending into scholarly excellence, particularly in Eastern theology and the East Syriac linguistic tradition.
Author of over seventy books, Mar Aprem carved a unique space for himself as a prolific writer and theologian deeply rooted in the heritage of the East Syriac tradition. His writings are considered vital reference points for anyone studying the liturgical, historical, and canonical dimensions of the Eastern Churches.
“He was a guardian of a unique legacy,” said Mar Raphael Thattil, “and his departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt not only in the Chaldean-Syrian Church but in the wider Eastern Christian world.”
The Major Archbishop conveyed the Syro-Malabar Church’s heartfelt condolences to the entire Chaldean-Syriac Church, especially to Mar Augin Kuriakose Metropolitan and the faithful now mourning the loss of their beloved shepherd. “We stand with you in prayer and solidarity, honoring the memory of a soul who devoted his entire life to the glory of God and the good of His people.”
Mar Aprem Thirumeni’s demise, Archbishop Thattil emphasized, is not the silencing of a voice but the continuation of a legacy one that will inspire generations of clergy, scholars, and faithful who walk the path he illuminated.
