Ivory Coast: Sisters of Our Lady of Peace Mark 60 Years of Faithful Service

Abidjan: The Sisters of Our Lady of Peace in Côte d’Ivoire joyfully concluded their Diamond Jubilee this week, commemorating six decades of tireless spiritual and social mission. The landmark celebration culminated in a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Cardinal Ignace Bessi Dogbo, Archbishop of Abidjan.

In his homily, Cardinal Bessi Dogbo praised the congregation's unwavering service to the Church and society. He encouraged the sisters to deepen their commitment through fervent prayer, spiritual rootedness, and unwavering dedication to Christ’s mission.

Founded on 29 June 1965 by Archbishop Bernard Yago of Abidjan, the Congregation of Our Lady of Peace has served faithfully under the guiding motto: “Seek and live by the peace of Christ through the human and spiritual promotion of women and young girls in rural and urban areas.”

Over the years, the sisters have impacted countless lives through education, healthcare, pastoral ministry, and social outreach especially among the marginalized.

Mother Christiane Baka, Superior General of the congregation, expressed heartfelt gratitude to past and present members for their enduring faith. She acknowledged the trials they have faced, yet reaffirmed the sisters’ resolve to stay anchored in Christ and to continue their mission with hope and courage.

“This Jubilee is not just about celebrating the past,” she said, “but about renewing our commitment to walk with Christ, who reveals Himself in every face we encounter.”

The Jubilee celebration also featured significant spiritual milestones: two sisters made their temporary vows, four professed perpetual vows, and five others marked 25 years of religious life. These sacred moments underscored the vitality of the congregation and its ongoing legacy.

Cardinal Bessi Dogbo’s message was rich with symbolism and spiritual urgency. He called the sisters to live lives saturated in prayer and Eucharistic devotion. “Let Christ in the Blessed Sacrament be the light that guides you. Let the tabernacle be your heart’s home and your daily compass. Place the Holy Eucharist at the center of your inner screen,” he said.

He urged them to be perpetual adorers and guardians of peace, drawing their strength from silent contemplation and the mystery of the altar.

The Sisters of Our Lady of Peace continue to embody their founding vision, empowering women and young girls, especially in underserved communities. Their work bridges spiritual care with practical outreach offering hope, healing, and transformation through Christ’s peace.

As the congregation steps into its next chapter, the Church in Côte d’Ivoire celebrates not only their past achievements but their unwavering witness of love, faith, and peace in a rapidly changing world.
