Thiruvananthapuram: Rainfall has intensified across Kerala as a strong low-pressure area over Rajasthan has evolved into a severe low-pressure system, leading to widespread weather alerts across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall in these districts. Additionally, yellow alerts have been declared in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, suggesting the possibility of moderate to heavy showers.
The severe low-pressure system currently positioned over Jharkhand is expected to influence Kerala’s weather pattern significantly over the next five days, with isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall likely till Saturday.
The IMD has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, possibly rising to 60 kmph in some areas. Residents, especially those in landslide-prone hilly regions, have been urged to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
Fisherfolk have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts until July 19, owing to the risk of rough seas and strong winds. The weather department has emphasized that maritime activity should be suspended due to turbulent conditions expected to prevail in the region until Friday.
