Venezuelan Bishops Urge National Renewal Rooted in Peace, Justice, and Gospel Values

Caracas: The Bishops of Venezuela have issued a powerful pastoral exhortation titled “Builders of Peace in Justice and Freedom” following the conclusion of their 124th Ordinary Plenary Assembly. Echoing the words of Pope Leo XIV “Peace be with you all” the letter invites the Church and the nation to actively pursue peace, grounded in truth, justice, and respect for human dignity.

In the document, the bishops emphasize that true peace cannot exist without justice. They call for a renewed social order that honors the dignity of every individual and prioritizes the common good above the privileges of a few. “Peace is not mere absence of conflict,” the bishops write, “but the fruit of justice shaped by God’s will.”

Reflecting on the recent canonizations of Venezuelan saints St. José Gregorio Hernández and St. Carmen Rendiles the bishops express hope that their example will inspire the nation's children to aspire to holiness and service. These canonizations, they noted, are milestones not just for the local Church but for all Venezuelans.

Turning to the nation's political and social challenges, the bishops issued a strong appeal to Venezuela’s civil authorities. They urged the government to uphold the fundamental rights enshrined in the country’s Constitution and to promote a society where all citizens are respected and free. “We exhort those in power to ensure justice and dignity for all, not just for those who benefit from privilege,” they stated.

The bishops also stressed the importance of spiritual renewal, reminding the faithful that only through the Holy Spirit can a nation find true justice and lasting peace. Citing John 16:7, they affirmed that the Spirit of the Risen Christ is the source of holiness, truth, and reconciliation.

Rejecting any political solution rooted in division or conquest, the bishops called for an inclusive national dialogue. They expressed hope for a social pact that transcends partisan agendas and prioritizes the good of the people. “This is not a moment for victors or vanquished,” the bishops declared. “We are all brothers and sisters, children of one God, called to build a shared homeland with hope and unity.”

The message concludes with a call to action for all Catholics and people of goodwill: to be peacemakers, bridge-builders, and guardians of justice in a nation longing for healing and transformation.
