European Parliament Demands Urgent Protection for Christians in Syria After Church Bombing

Strasbourg: In a strongly worded resolution, the European Parliament has called for immediate action to safeguard Christians and other religious minorities in Syria, following a deadly terrorist attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Damascus.

The resolution, introduced jointly by multiple political groups, condemned the suicide bombing carried out by Islamic State militants on June 22 at the Mar Elias Church. The brutal attack claimed the lives of around 30 Christians and left 63 others injured, sparking international outrage.

Lawmakers stressed the urgent need to uphold religious freedom and human rights across Syria, particularly as Christian communities face rising levels of persecution. The resolution highlighted disturbing trends including the destruction of churches and cemeteries, threats and harassment at military checkpoints, and systemic discrimination in employment, licensing, and public services.

Calling the attack a stark reminder of ongoing threats, the Parliament urged the Syrian government to thoroughly investigate the bombing, bring those responsible to justice, and ensure the restoration of the historic Mar Elias Church. It also pressed for sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for orchestrating or enabling persecution against religious communities.

Beyond punitive measures, the Parliament encouraged Syrian authorities to actively foster interfaith dialogue and reconciliation, viewing these efforts as crucial to long-term peace and societal healing. The resolution serves as both a rebuke of religious violence and a broader appeal to the international community to remain vigilant in protecting vulnerable religious minorities in conflict zones.
