Motor Vehicle Department Issues Monsoon Travel Advisory for Safer Roads

Thiruvananthapuram: As monsoon rains intensify across Kerala, the State Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has issued a detailed advisory urging drivers to exercise caution and follow safety protocols while traveling during the rainy season. The department emphasized that avoiding unnecessary travel can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and poor visibility.

Motorists are advised to ensure that their vehicles are properly serviced before venturing out in the rain. Particular attention should be given to tire condition, brake performance, windshield wipers, headlights, and electrical components. Regular maintenance can prevent sudden breakdowns and help maintain control on slippery roads.

The advisory calls for moderate speeds and a safe distance between vehicles to minimize collision risks. Abrupt braking or rapid acceleration should be avoided, as these actions can lead to skidding on wet surfaces. Drivers should adopt a steady and cautious driving style suited to unpredictable monsoon road conditions.

Lighting and signaling are also addressed in the guidelines. The MVD has recommended using low-beam headlights instead of high beams, as the latter can blind other drivers when reflected by rain. Proper use of indicators is stressed, and the department has cautioned against driving with hazard lights on unless the vehicle is stationary due to an emergency.

The Motor Vehicle Department concluded by calling on the public to act responsibly, highlighting that careful driving, vehicle preparedness, and patience on the road can collectively contribute to safer journeys during the monsoon season.
