Thiruvananthapuram: In an unusual turn of events that has sparked both concern and amusement across Kerala, a KSRTC bus driver faced disciplinary action after a routine breath analyzer test reportedly detected alcohol in his system all because he had consumed jackfruit.
The incident took place at the KSRTC depot in Vithura, where the driver, preparing for his shift, underwent a mandatory alcohol screening. Much to his shock, the breathalyzer signaled alcohol presence, triggering an internal report and suspension protocols. However, the driver insisted he hadn't consumed any liquor and instead blamed the result on a meal that included ripe jackfruit.
Further inquiry revealed that the driver had indeed eaten jackfruit shortly before the test. Ripe jackfruit, especially when slightly overripe, can undergo natural fermentation, releasing trace amounts of ethanol enough, experts say, to confuse certain breathalyzers and mimic the signature of alcohol consumption.
Transport officials initially skeptical, have now been prompted to re-examine testing protocols, especially in regions where jackfruit and similar fermented foods are dietary staples. Health experts too have weighed in, calling for awareness about how natural foods can impact alcohol detection methods.
The Kerala State Transport Department is expected to review the case formally, and officials hinted that action against the driver may be reversed pending further investigation.
The bizarre episode has gone viral on local media, stirring debates on the accuracy of breath analyzers and their role in a culturally diverse culinary landscape. For now, KSRTC drivers might think twice before indulging in jackfruit before reporting for duty.
