Vatican City: In the wake of a devastating fire at a shopping centre in Kut, Iraq, Pope Leo XIV has conveyed heartfelt condolences and spiritual solidarity to the victims and their families. The Pope’s message came through a telegram signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
The Holy Father expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of life and the suffering caused by the blaze, assuring the injured and the bereaved of his prayers. He entrusted the souls of the deceased to God's mercy and extended blessings of strength, comfort, and peace to all affected especially the emergency teams who continue rescue and relief operations.
The tragic fire, which erupted just five days after the mall’s grand opening, claimed at least 69 lives, with 11 more individuals still unaccounted for. The complex, which housed a hypermarket and restaurants, was bustling with shoppers and diners at the time of the incident. Quick action by civil defence teams resulted in the rescue of 45 people.
Calling it a national tragedy, the governor of Wasit Province declared three days of mourning and announced a formal investigation. Lawsuits have already been filed against the building and mall owners as authorities seek answers and accountability.
