Pope Leo Urges Faithful to Open Their Hearts to Christ and Others

Castel Gandolfo: During his Sunday Angelus address from his summer residence, Pope Leo delivered a moving reflection on the theme of hospitality, calling on the faithful to “welcome the Lord who knocks at our door” and to cultivate the grace of both giving and receiving with humility.

Drawing from the liturgical readings of the day featuring Abraham and Sarah's warm welcome to divine visitors, and the Gospel scene of Martha and Mary Pope Leo emphasized that true hospitality is not just about action, but about presence. “Kindness and generosity are essential,” he said, “but so is the humility to listen and receive.”

The Pope observed that while Martha was busy serving, her sister Mary chose to sit and listen to Jesus, understanding the deeper invitation to communion. “Mary reminds us that our hearts must be open not only to act but to be transformed by encounter,” he said. “Our lives only flourish when we open ourselves to something greater than us God, others, and creation.”

He warned against the modern rush of constant activity that can cause us to overlook the joy of being fully present. “In our daily lives, we must not miss the better part being with the Lord and listening to Him.”

Pope Leo also challenged believers to embrace the dual dimension of hospitality: “It is not only about offering welcome but also learning to be welcomed. Every genuine encounter is a gift a doorway through which God often enters our lives.”

He concluded with a Marian reflection, inviting all to look to Mary as the model of perfect hospitality. “She welcomed the Lord into her womb and into her life. The Church too is called to be such a home open to all and always ready to receive Christ, who continues to knock at our doors.”

In a world marked by division and noise, Pope Leo’s words were a gentle but urgent call to rediscover the sacredness of presence, silence, and open-hearted encounter.
